After this week’s incident, in which an underwater cable was damaged, NATO has decided to expand its military presence in the Baltic Sea, as announced by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Friday, the 27th of December.
“Spoke with [Finnish President] Alexander Stubb about the ongoing Finnish-led investigation into possible sabotage of undersea cables. I expressed my full solidarity and support. NATO will enhance its military presence in the Baltic Sea,” Rutte wrote on X [formerly Twitter].
As previously reported, an investigation into the damaging of an electric and communications cable in the Baltic Sea is underway. Russia “shadow fleet” tanker “Eagle S”, under the flag of Cook Islands is suspected of damaging the cable with its anchor.
The “EstLink 2” cable connecting Estonia and Finland ceased to function earlier this week. Communications companies informed Estonian authorities about damages to three Estonian-Finnish communication cables.
