NATO to deploy peacekeeping reinforcements in Kosovo

NATO has decided to deploy peacekeeping reinforcements in Kosovo, where in the north clashes have broken out between the local police and ethnic Serbs.
“The deployment of additional NATO forces is a prudent measure to maintain peace,” said the commander of NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command in Naples Stuart B. Munsch.
The NATO-led international peacekeeping forces in Kosovo (KFOR) reported that on Monday, the 30th of May, more than 30 peacekeepers were injured in clashes with Serbian protesters in the northern parts of Kosovo.

Lately there have been many clashes between the local police and Serbian protesters in this part of Kosovo. Several dozen Serbian people have been injured in those clashes so far.

Protesters are demanding the removal of ethnic Albanians from their recently elected mayoral posts.
The Serbian minority boycotted the municipal elections that took place in April. This is why control over local councils went to Albanians even though voter activity was less than 3.5%.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti appointed mayors despite recommendations from the European Union and US and Serbian protests.
