National Alliance leader says party heard offers to join New Unity’s coalition

The National Alliance (NA) has received offers to join the coalition led by New Unity, said the leader of NA’s Saeima faction Raivis Dzintars in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma.

When asked if those offers were recent or have been presented constantly, he claimed these offers have intensified.

Dzintars, however, said his party is not OK with becoming some “suture or bandage” for this government.

According to him, the ruling coalition has chosen the safest path with a plan for “cosmetic repairs”. “I believe this is restart in rhetoric. In fact, it is a short respite, but little will change in the government’s actions,” Dzintars said.

He believes in the long run, it would be in Latvia’s national interest if the government was led by nationally conservative forces, provided that they understand the geopolitical challenges and are united in the main settings.

Dzintars said he would like to see NA and Combined List, which are currently in the opposition, to take charge over the government formation process.

When asked about the chances of the existing government of making it to the next Saeima elections, Dzintars said it’s 50/50.

As previously reported, in recent weeks, several politicians of the ruling coalition in Latvia have expressed that a “restart” is necessary and expected in the work of the government. Behind the scenes there is talk that the most likely version is that the “restart” could take the form of replacement of multiple ministers. The first on the list of ministers to be replaced is Kaspars Briškens from “Progressives” party.

According to unofficial information available to LETA, the “restart” in the government could affect ministers from each party in the coalition.
