The possibility of enough signatures to dissolve the 14th Saeima being collected is very, very low, said leader of the National Alliance, Saeima deputy Raivis Dzintars in an interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma on Tuesday, the 14th of November.
According to him, the ongoing signature collection to initiate a referendum to dismiss the Saeima looks more like Ainārs Šlesers’ party Latvia in First Place (LPV) to promote themselves before the European Parliament elections.
At the same time, Dzintars allows that his party’s voters have different opinions on this topic. This includes whether this is a tool to actually improve the situation, and “whether there is reason to believe the next parliament could be better than this one”.
“We [NA] are an interested side,
this is about our seats too,
so we fully respect our residents’ will,” Dzintars commented on the collection of signatures for the 14th Saeima’s dissolution.
As for the topic of the partnership institute, the politician said he invites residents to not support this referendum to prevent Saeima’s passed legislative amendments. According to him, the majority of the Saeima acted against public interests by passing these law amendments.
“If we allow such a precedent,
there will be the next step and the next one after that,
and this is why a referendum is needed,” explained the leader of the National Alliance.
As previously reported, last week there were two signature collection initiatives organised – one for a referendum to the Saeima’s dissolution and one for the partnership institute. Both the signature collection term and the form differ between the two.
Collection of signatures for the 14th Saeima’s dissolution referendum was initiated by parties, LPV, For Stability!, People’s power, Sovereign Power, People’s Servants for Latvia, Jaunlatvieši Association, Pamats-LV and New Harmony.
After the Saeima passed the aforementioned legislative draft prepared by Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, 34 members of the Combined List, LPV and NA requested this matter to be submitted for a public referendum to decide.
