Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre reports that the cyclones approaching from the west across the Atlantic Ocean will bring warmer masses of air to the country, causing air temperature to reach above 0° C.
Together with cyclones several precipitation zones will pass through the country, bringing mostly snow to the country at night. During the day, however, precipitation will consist mostly of wet snow and rain. At the beginning of the week meteorologists predict intense thaw in Latvia – roads will be slippery!
On Monday, the 9th of January, weather will be cloudy. At night the sky in eastern territories will clear up at times. Together with clouds there will be snow. Thaw is expected, and freezing rain along with it. Ice will form and roads will be slippery! The wind will be slow to medium and will blow from the south-east and south. Maximum daytime air temperature in eastern parts of the country will be -1° C… -5° C (-1° C… +2° C in western areas).
On Tuesday it will be overcast. On the night to Tuesday a precipitation zone will reach Latvia – many parts will experience snowfall, rain, wet snow and thaw. Meteorologists predict more precipitation for eastern parts of the country.
Roads will remain slippery due to ice. Motorists are advised to be cautious!
Fog may form in morning hours. The wind will be slow to medium and will blow from the south-east and east. The wind will become strong along the coast at night. During the day wind speed will go down. Minimal air temperature will be 0° C… -5° C. During the day air temperature will be 0° C… +5° C.
On Wednesday weather will be dictated by a wide cyclone. Weather will be overcast and rich with precipitation. At night Latvia can expect snow, whereas during the day precipitation will consist of wet snow and rain. The wind will blow from the south and south-east, which will reach a speed of 15-18 m/sec along the coast. Air temperature at night will be +1° C… +6° C in western parts of the country. In eastern parts of the country air temperature will be +1° C… -4° C.
Current forecasts suggest weather will remain mostly cloudy in the second half of the week. Several precipitation zones will pass through the country from the west, bringing wet snow and rain. Air temperature at night and during the day will stay at 0° C… +5° C. Air temperature may drop below 0° C only at night and in eastern parts of the country. Snow and ice will continue to thaw.
