Moscow projects loss of 200 000 jobs as company exodus starts to bite

Although Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that economic measures against Russia have failed, Moscow’s major has warned that 200 000 jobs could be lost, American news site Business Insider and British-Canadian news agency Reuters report.
On Monday, April 18, Moscow’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote in his official blog: «According to our estimates, about 200,000 people are at risk of losing their jobs». Sobyanin added that Moscow had approved an employment-support program worth RUB 3.36 billion (EUR 40 million) that would supply temporary jobs or training to unemployed persons, which would help around 58 000 workers.
Also on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said: «We can now confidently say that such policy (of sanctions) towards Russia has failed. (..) The economic blitzkrieg strategy didn’t work. Moreover, the initiators themselves couldn’t get away with the sanctions.»
Reuters reports that over 600 companies have announced their withdrawal from Russia since Putin ordered the Russian Armed Forces to invade Ukraine, according to the Yale School of Management. Many Western companies have said they would pay wages to their employees for a few months.
