Russia has accused German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of taking the path of armaments, saying such actions are “grounds for concern,” Reuters reported.
The conservative Merz, who took office in May, has taken a tougher stance on supporting Ukraine than his predecessor Olaf Scholz, and has also promised to put more pressure on Russia to end the war.
Merz visited Kiyv for the first time a few days after taking office
and has supported Ukraine’s right to fire long-range weapons at Russian territory. Under the new chancellor, Germany plans to increase defense spending to 3.5 percent of GDP by 2029.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Germany has been hostile towards Russia in recent years, and that Merz is intensifying “anti-Russian rhetoric” every day. She said that the aggressive rhetoric, the choice to aggravate relations with Russia and the increased armament are grounds for concern, and that German citizens themselves should be the first to be concerned.
Berlin has not commented on Zakharova’s statements.
