More than 26 000 Latvian teachers prepare for upcoming strike

More than 26 000 Latvian teachers have signed up for the protest procession and three-day strike, as confirmed by Latvian Association of Education and Science Workers (LIZDA).
Approximately 7 500 teachers are expected to join the procession. The final number of supporters of the protest will be clarified soon, because it will remain possible to sign up for it until Friday, the 14th of April.
LIZDA manager Inga Vanaga explains the decision to organise a three-day strike was made because the government has failed to implement the agreement in regards to the pay increase schedule and workload balancing.
The strike might not happen if politicians come up with some last-minute solution.

LIZDA plans to organise a protest on the 24th of April. There will also be a three-day strike involving Latvian teachers.

LIZDA has turned to Saeima speaker Edvards Smiltēns, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš, Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša, Minister of Finance Arvils Ašeradens and chairperson of Saeima’s Education, Culture and Science Committee Agita Zariņa-Stūre, inviting them to come to Dome Square on the 24th of April. There they will be able to meet with teachers and discuss various problems with them. If officials do not show, LIZDA will consider requesting the dismissal of the minister of education.
