Currently there are no indications there could be some provocations on the 9th of May, said Latvian Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis in an interview to TV3 programme 900 seconds.
In regards to the 9th of May, he said that there are no signals at the moment that could indicate there are some provocations in the works. At the same time, Latvian security services are preparing to stay on high alert on the 9th and 10th of May.
Kozlovskis said various security measures could be changed depending on the situation. Nevertheless, currently there is no information about possible attempts to escalate the situation on the 9th of May.
The minister mentioned the situation on the Latvian-Belarusian border and the recent attack on the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia as examples of attempts to escalate the situation.
“We are in a state of hybrid war,” the minister reminded, adding that various challenges appear nearly every day.
In 2023, Latvian State Police commenced 35 administrative violation procedures and four criminal procedures on the 9th of May. 26 people were detained.
The most common violations related to the placing flowers and prohibited symbols in places where dismantled Soviet monuments previously stood, as well as cases of the use of symbols of military aggression, such as St. George’s ribbons, by persons in other public places. Administrative offence proceedings were also initiated for non-compliance with the legal requirements of police officers and being in a public place under the influence of alcohol, as well as other offences.
