Minister: speeding up eastern border infrastructure installation requires a lot of negotiating

We need to talk with construction companies some more if we want to speed up the installation and reinforcement of Latvia’s eastern border, said Latvian Minister of the Interior Māris Kučinskis in an interview to TV3.
The politician admits that in the context of Latvia’s external borders the most important issue is intensifying the construction of infrastructure, because so far the speed has not been very good.
When asked what obstacles are in the way of efforts to speed up construction, the minister added that the majority of tasks are already completed, and once again mentioned that for three years border construction work have basically stopped.

Construction continues, but the speed “is what it is”.

According to the minister, it is necessary to talk with construction workers in order to speed up construction work.
Recently there has been information reported that Latvia needs to shore up its defences along the Belarusian and Russian borders, because when it comes to tightening the border along the eastern flank, Latvia is behind Lithuania and Poland.
