Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže leaves an impression of the “Iron Lady”, politologist says

The new Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže leaves an impression of the “Iron Lady”, admits politologist Juris Rozenvalds.
According to him, the challenges Braže has ahead do not differ from the ones her predecessors had to deal with. This includes external and domestic security, the place of the European Union in various economic processes, as well as efforts to maintain Europe’s position on the global market.
When asked if Braže could inherit the status previously held by ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs and current President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, who remained in his post for 12 years, Rozenvalds said it is difficult to say at the moment. However, considering her experience, Braže has all opportunities for that.
“Braže’s previous posts provided her with connections and contacts, which is very important. She is the second female minister of foreign affairs in Latvia’s history. Looking from the side of New Unity, she is the best choice a the moment,” said the politologist.
As for Braže as a non-party politician, Rozenvalds said the post of the minister of foreign affairs is slightly special, because one’s affiliation to political parties doesn’t play much of a role. He said that traditionally foreign affairs are usually resolved through involvement from various political forces.
“The minister of foreign affairs needs to implement collective decisions by using his or her personal charm and international contacts. This is another positive about Braže. The minister of foreign affairs also represents the whole country, not just New Unity, for example. She has experience, she is proactive and energetic. This could give positive results,” said the politologist.
LETA previously reported that the Saeima has approved Latvian diplomat Baiba Braže as the new Minister of Foreing Affairs. 66 deputies voted in her favour, 11 voted against, and nine abstained in the vote.
