Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) report they are in the process of organising comprehensive national defence exercises Namejs 2023 to improve and strengthen their ability to perform various operations in the event of threats to the state. Exercises will be going on between the 5th of September and the 2nd of October across the entire country. It is planned to involve approximately 8 500 participants.
Attention residents! National Armed Forces, allied forces stationed in Latvia, troops and military vehicles will be moving on the main and regional roads in the country during military exercises. Military aircraft will be performing various tasks in the skies above Latvia. This includes flying at a low altitude. Firing will be heard at military bases as well.
NBS also report that military exercises will include cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and subordinate institutions, Ministry of the Interior, Emergency Medical Service, as well as various municipalities and companies.
Namejs 2023 military exercises will be attended by troops and members of the National Guard from all units,
as well as fresh conscripts and reservists.
Aside from Latvian and allied troops, military exercises will include participation from state and municipal institutions, as well as representatives from the private sector and organisations that provide assistance to defence of the state.
Troops from the US, Denmark, Estonia and Lithuania Military will participate in military exercises in Latvia.
Among the participating units are the following: NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia, NATO Force Integration Unit Latvia, Task Force Latvia. The Joint Expeditionary Force will assist with military exercises.
This year for the first time military exercises are organised in cooperation with NATO Multinational Division North Headquarters. As part of comprehensive state defence exercises Namejs 2023 it is also planned to hold Silver Arrow military exercises of the Land Forces Mechanized Infantry Brigade.
In response to the changing security challenges, Latvia’s national defence system needs to be comprehensive and based on the readiness of society and state institutions to overcome the crisis, as well as resist external influence. Comprehensive national defence system includes not only national defence-related state or municipal institutions, but also private sector representatives, businesses, NGOs, residents and other people.
The purpose of a comprehensive national defence system is to promote the establishment of a system of planning, coordination and partnership of activities of nationally important functions between state institutions, as well as the private sector, non-governmental organisations and citizens. The practical task of a comprehensive national defence system is to determine for each state institution specific tasks and roles in the defence of the state.
