MFA: Recognition of the State of Palestine is currently not on the Latvian government’s agenda

Recognition of the state of Palestine is not currently on the agenda of the Latvian government, the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said.

She stressed that Latvia’s position has not changed – it supports the two-state solution, which was achieved through negotiations and approved by the UN Security Council.

“We believe that the most important tasks at the moment are to release the hostages taken in Hama and to prevent the threat posed by Hama, as well as to urgently address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. This requires every effort,” the MFA press secretary noted.

Foreign ministers of 15 countries issued a joint statement on Tuesday after a conference in New York,

calling on the world’s countries to take action to recognize the state of Palestine.

Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain would officially recognize the state of Palestine in September unless Israel had taken several “significant steps” by then, including agreeing to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
