Meteorologists warn: subzero temperatures, snow, and ice returning to Latvia

On Friday, the skies will be cloudy, with gradual clearing expected in the afternoon in the eastern part of the country. Most areas will see occasional rain, while from midday some eastern regions may also experience snow or sleet, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

A light to moderate west or southwest wind will blow, shifting to the north during the second half of the night. Early in the night, winds near the coast may still be gusty. Both at night and during the day, air temperatures will remain around +3 to +8°C, but will begin to fall as the day progresses. Fog may form in some areas during the night.

A brief spell of colder weather will return over the weekend. Early Saturday morning, temperatures will drop below zero across most of the country, reaching as low as -6°C in some parts of the far east. Slightly negative temperatures will persist during the night and daytime mainly in central and eastern regions.

Drivers are urged to be cautious, as icy road conditions are expected in places.

On Saturday, a weather front will move in, bringing snow and sleet to most of Latvia. By early Sunday, as temperatures rise, snow will turn to rain in part of the country.

By Sunday, temperatures will be above zero almost everywhere. As a new precipitation zone moves in during the second half of the day, rainfall will melt the snow cover, which may remain only in some eastern locations. Winds will vary over these days—on Saturday, easterly winds will dominate, while on Sunday they will shift to the southwest and south.

The week leading up to the holidays will begin under the influence of a cyclone, bringing wet weather with widespread rain and occasional sleet in the far east. Temperatures will climb again to +3…+8°C. Midweek is expected to be drier and slightly cooler, with light frost possible in some regions at night.
