Meteorologists promise proper winter weather in Latvia this weekend

Frost will be lasting and there will be frequent snowing. On Friday, the 24th of November, air temperature will still be above zero in many parts of Latvia, as reported by Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
A wide cyclone and the precipitation zone associated with it started dictating weather conditions in Latvia in the second half of the week. It brought heavy snowing and blizzards to parts of the country. In some areas the layer of snow went up by 9-13 cm. Nevertheless, the layer of snow in most of Latvia went down rapidly. Southern and south-western wind picked up in strength, with speed reaching 15-19 m/sec (27-30 m/sec along the coast).
Friday’s weather conditions will be dictated by a cyclone. Although the sky will be mostly clouded, there will be moments of clear sky. Every now and then there will be rain and wet snow. In the east there will be mostly snow.

Roads will become slippery and visibility will suffer during precipitation!

The wind will blow from the west and north-west, reaching a speed of 15-18 m/sec (up to 20 m/sec along the coast in the morning). Maximum air temperature will reach -1° C… +4° C.
Colder masses of air will flow to the country at the end of the week, bringing about more winter-like weather. There will still be a lot of clouds. Snowing is expected in many parts of the country. Wet snow is expected in coastal areas. The wind will be slow to moderate and will blow from the north.
At night air temperature will drop to -2° C… +8° C (a couple of degrees warmer in Kurzeme). Daytime air temperature will reach +1° C… -5° C.
Next week will be frosty in Latvia. There is also a possibility of a new cyclone reaching Latvia from the south-east, which will bring snowing and strong northern wind to the whole country. This cyclone may cause the layer of snow to grow by 10-15 cm.
Snowing will continue every day in some of Latvia’s parts next week. Air temperature at night and during the day will stay at -3° C… -10° C.
***
There will be plenty of precipitation. This means the water level will rise in multiple western rivers on Friday and Saturday.
On the night to Saturday it will become colder and river run-off will start going down. In bodies of water, ice will resume to form. Under the influence of the ice formation process, the water level will begin to fluctuate. In conditions of increased run-off, increased formation of drafts is expected. At the end of the third ten-day period of November and the beginning of December, an ice sheet will form and strengthen in most Latvian rivers.
