The beginning of this week will bring generally windy weather rich in precipitation this week. Rain, snow and even blizzards are expected, as reported by Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
On the night to Wednesday atmospheric pressure will start going up. Weather will be dictated by an anticyclone. This means the sky will become clear and weather in general will be dry. Northern winds will carry colder masses of air to the country.
In the middle of the week air temperature at night may drop as far as -20° C… -22° C.
Days will be cold as well. The period of intense cold will not be long, as a cyclone will bring precipitation-rich weather to the country.
On Monday a new cyclone will be dictating weather conditions. On the night to Monday eastern regions experienced snow and blizzard. In some areas the layer of snow will increase by several centimetres. In the middle of the day a new precipitation zone will approach Latvia from the west, bringing snow and wet snow to all of the country’s territory. In western regions snow will transition into rain.
It is also possible there may be local lightning events.
The layer of snow may increase by more than 5 cm in eastern regions of the country. Roads may become slippery in some areas. Visibility will be poor during active precipitation. Motorists and other road traffic participants are urged to be careful.
The wind will be strong and will blow from the north-west and west. Wind speed will reach 15-19 m/sec. In the evening the wind will blow from the west. Along the coast, however, wind speed will reach up to 20 m/sec. Minimal air temperature at night will be -2° C… -6° C. Along the coast air temperature will remain above 0° C. Maximum air temperature during the day day will be +1° C… +6° C.
On Tuesday weather will be dictated by the cyclone. Its influence will gradually go down during the day. Although the sky will be cloudy, there will be moments of clear sky. Many parts of the country will experience precipitation – in some areas the layer of snow will increase by another 1-4 cm. Roads will remain slippery. The wind will blow from the south-west and west. Wind speed will increase to 15-19 m/sec.
During the day and at night air temperature will stay at 0° C… -5° C (0° C… +3° C along the coast).
On Wednesday and Thursday there will be volatile amounts of clouds in the sky. The day will pass without major precipitation. The wind will be slow and will blow from the north. On the night to Wednesday air temperature in most of the country may drop as far as -9° C… -14° C (-5° C… -10° C along the coast in Kurzeme). In eastern parts of the country air temperature will drop as far as -20° C.
Daytime air temperature will not go higher than -2° C… -7° C (-7° C… -13° C in eastern parts). The night to Thursday may be even colder: as the sky clears, air temperature may drop as far as -20° C… -22° C in Latvia’s eastern parts. Daytime air temperature will not go higher than -2° C… -7° C (-7° C… -13° C in the east). The night to Thursday may be even colder: with clear sky air temperature may drop as low as -20° C… -22° C in eastern parts of the country.
At the end of the week weather will be dictated by the cyclone. Air temperature will increase on the weekend.
