This weekend, according to Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, a cyclone will approach from the west, bringing precipitation, as well as strong wind, which will be especially strong along the coast.
The wind will gradually calm down next week, and only some precipitation is expected. Air temperature at night may drop as far as -10° C at night in eastern regions.
On Friday, the 17th of February, the sky will be cloudy with moments of precipitation – rain in the west and snow in the east.
Motorists are invited to be careful, as roads will be slippery!
During the day, as a wide cyclone approaches from the west, south and south-west wind will pick up in strength and wind speed along the coast is expected to reach 15-19 m/sec. Air temperature at night and during the day will remain at 0° C… +5° C. Air temperature will drop below 0° C at night only in eastern regions.
On Saturday the precipitation zone will pass through Latvia’s territory. Meteorologists predict lasting rain and wet snow. At night western regions will experience heavy rain. Eastern regions, on the other hand, may experience snowfall. As a result, the layer of snow may increase by 1-4 cm. However, as precipitation phases change, the overall layer of snow will go down again. The wind will blow from the south-west and south. At night the wind will blow from the west and north-west and will be strong. Eastern areas may experience a blizzard. Visibility will go down considerably. In Kurzeme the wind will be stronger, reaching 25 m/sec along the coast. Air temperature will stay at 0° C… +5° C.
Sunday will remain cloudy, but at night the sky will clear up briefly in south-western regions of the country. Precipitation will appear every now and then. Snowing is expected mostly in eastern parts of the country. The layer of snow may increase by 5-10 cm. With the wind remaining strong, air temperature at night and during the day is expected at -1° C… +3° C.
At the start of the new week, cyclone activity will go down and the sky will clear up. The wind will gradually calm down as well. Although in snowing is expected in most of the country on Monday, the 20th of February, precipitation will have calmed down by Tuesday. Air temperature at night is expected at 0° C… -7° C. On Tuesday air temperature in eastern parts of the country may drop as far as -11° C. Daytime maximum air temperature will stay between +2° C… -4° C.
In the middle of the week and the second half of the week anticyclone activity will increase. This means no major precipitation events will happen. As colder masses of air are carried to the country, air temperature at night in most of the country will remain negative.
