The end of November and the start of December in Latvia had properly winter-like weather conditions – a lot of snow with stable and frosty weather. However, this week weather conditions will change, according to Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
On Monday, the 11th of December, there will be more snow in Latvia. The layer of snow will increase. As the week continues, however, snow will switch to wet snow and rain.
Colder masses of air will mix with warmer masses of air. Air temperature may exceed 0° C this week. This means snow will gradually melt.
Nevertheless, nights will remain frosty in Latvia – under such variable weather conditions roads will become slippery.
Motorists are urged to be especially careful.
Weather will remain cloudy and grey the whole week.
A wide precipitation zone will approach Latvia in the morning on Monday – snowfall is expected in most of the country. In central and eastern areas the layer of snow will increase by 5 to 6 cm. As air temperature rises, wet snow will fall on Tuesday (rain along the coast). Freezing rain is expected as well.
On the night to Wednesday fog will appear in some areas because of slow wind. On the night to Monday air temperature stayed at -2° C… -7° C. With warmer masses of air flowing to the country, daytime air temperature in central regions and the coast will reach +1° C… +2° C.
With cyclone activity continuing, weather will remain similar for most of the week – precipitation is expected every now and then in the form of wet snow, snow and rain. With air temperature gradually going up, daytime air temperature may reach up to +1° C… +6° C. At night, however, air temperature will drop below 0° C in most of the country.
