Meteorologists predict a period of thaw in Latvia this week

This week several cyclones will pass through Latvia from the west, bringing precipitation to all of the country’s territories. Ice may form in many parts of the country on Tuesday. According to current forecasts, thaw may continue until Christmas.
While last week air temperature at night dropped as far as -20° C in some areas, it will start getting warmer this week.
On Monday, the 19th of December, weather will be mostly cloudy. The sun will shine every now and then, but there will be precipitation in morning hours. In most of the country the wind will blow from the south and south-west, reaching a speed of up to 15 m/sec in Kurzeme and Vidzeme at night. The wind will be stronger along the sea coast, where it may reach 20-21 m/sec. Minimal air temperature at night will stay at -3° C… -7° C (-2° C… +3° C in northern regions). In Latvia’s southern regions air temperature will drop as far as -8 C… -11° C. Maximum daytime air temperature in northern parts of Latvia will stay at -2° C… +3° C, whereas in southern parts it will be -3° C… -8° C.
Tuesday will be overcast. Starting with the first half of the night many parts of the country will experience precipitation. This means snow and wet snow in eastern parts of the country, and rain in western parts. Fog may form as well. Ice formations are expected on roads. Motorists are advised to be careful. Like Monday, the wind will blow from the south and south-west, which may become strong along the coast. Minimal air temperature at night will be -5° C… -10° C (-2° C… -4° C in Kurzeme and along the coast). Daytime maximum air temperature in the east will be around 0° C. In most of the country, however, it will be +2° C… +6° C.
On Wednesday, a layer of clouds will be covering the sky, bringing precipitation to many parts of the country.

With wind remaining slow to moderate, fog may form in evening and night hours.

Air temperature at night and during the day will be +1° C… +6° C in most of the country except eastern parts of the country, where air temperature may drop below 0° C.
In the second half of the week it will be overcast with rain and wet snow in many areas. On Thursday the wind become strong and will blow from the south-west. The wind will calm down around the evening. Air temperature will remain at +1° C… +6° C.
At the end of the week weather will be dictated by cyclone activity. This means precipitation in most of the country on Christmas Eve. Meteorologists expect mostly rain. On the night to Sunday clouds will start gradually dispersing, clearing the sky. This means it will become colder again. At times air temperature may drop as far as -8° C.
