Meteorological winter expected in Latvia’s eastern territories

Although last week there was proper autumn weather in Latvia, this week it will be replaced by conditions typical for winter – wet snow and snow, as reported by Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
Precipitation and the lowering air temperature make it clear that December is not far away. Average air temperature will remain at around 0 C. Meteorological winter is already observed by Alūksne’s meteorological station. As air temperature continues going down, it is expected for meteorological winter to start in other eastern parts of the country! At the end of the week atmospheric pressure will start going up –

the national holiday will have dry weather.

The view from Alūksne meteorological station on the 14th of November. Photo: LVĢMCIn the middle of the week the sun will shine every now and then. The sky in most of the country will be cloudy. Precipitation will be short-term in many parts of the country, but the intensity will not be high.
With slow wind, which will blow from the north on Wednesday, the 15th of November, visibility will be poor at night because of fog. As air temperature continues going down, some roads will become slippery. Motorists are urged to be careful! At night minimal air temperature will be -2° C… +3° C, whereas daytime air temperature will reach 0° C… +4° C.
At the end of the week atmospheric pressure will go up – days will be dry, wind will be slow and air temperature will continue going down. At night air temperature in most of the country will stay at -1° C… -6° C. On the day of Latvia’s national holiday air temperature will go down to 0° C… -1° C in parts of Kurzeme. Maximum daytime air temperature will remain similar to previous days.
Next week, as a new cyclone approaches from the west, precipitation is expected across the whole country. The current forecast indicates that on some days with warmer masses of air flowing to the country, air temperature will not drop below 0 C in many parts of the country.
