Media: Finland and Sweden agree to announce their NATO decision in May

The Nordic neighbours, Finland and Sweden, have agreed to announce their decisions on weather or not to join NATO together in May, that’s according to Swedish and Finnish newspapers as quoted by TheLocal.se.
Finnish tabloid newspaper Iltalehti and its Swedish counterpart Expressen broke the news writing that Sweden’s government has called on for Finland to delay its announcement so that the two countries can announce their decisions simultaneously.
That is planned to happen in the third week of May, when Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö is expected to pay a state visit to Stockholm.

The information has not been publicly confirmed by either government, but if it is true, the timing to make the decision will be short for Sweden. That is because the Swedish government’s new assessment of the security only due to be published on May 13, which will be the Friday before the claimed week for the announcement, TheLocal.se reports.
Sweden and Finland, which has a long lard border with Russia, are the only Nordic countries that are not part of the 30-member military alliance. Both nations started discussions on the need to join NATO after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
