The so-called peace negotiations led by former U.S. President Donald Trump to end Russia’s war against Ukraine are a grotesque mockery of diplomacy, said former Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga in an interview with TV3’s morning program 900 Seconds.
She sharply criticized Trump and his administration, stating that the former president makes illogical and absurd statements on a daily basis — the kind that “make your hair stand on end”.
Vīķe-Freiberga emphasized that former U.S. President Joe Biden played a crucial role in helping Ukraine defend itself against Russia, but his actions were “far too slow and far too cautious.” In contrast, she likened Trump’s current stance to that of a highway robber, ready to tear apart the “corpse of Ukraine” together with his partner in crime, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
“I don’t see a man here who respects any of the basic principles of international relations — even those laid out in the UN Charter,” she said of Trump.
Commenting on Trump’s so-called peace talks, Vīķe-Freiberga repeatedly underscored that the process is a farce — especially since Ukraine, as the victim, is essentially not even involved in the talks. Instead, she noted, the “aggressor is negotiating with a former ally of the victim, who now seems to think it’s more interesting to cozy up to the aggressor.”
By trying to “make deals” with Russia, Trump has severed all normal lines of cooperation that once existed across the North American continent, the former Latvian president added.
Vīķe-Freiberga expressed deep concern about how the world will survive the remainder of Trump’s term in office.
