Lithuanians uncover Russia-linked terror planning network

The Lithuanian Prosecutor’s Office has reported that a network of suspects has been uncovered who planned to carry out terrorist attacks in Europe by using delivery services to send explosive packages.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Criminal Police Department have announced that Lithuanian citizen A.Š. sent four packages from Vilnius in July 2024. He used the services of DHL and DPD courier services. The packages contained homemade bombs disguised as massage pads and cosmetic product packaging. They were filled with thermite, a highly explosive substance used in industry and the military.
Two of the packages were sent by plane to the UK, and two by truck to Poland. One of the bombs exploded at Leipzig Airport before being loaded onto a connecting flight. Another bomb detonated on a DPD delivery van in Poland, and a third at a DHL warehouse in Birmingham. The fourth bomb failed to explode due to a technical fault. Authorities said

the bombs were designed to cause serious fires and could have had catastrophic consequences.

The investigation is being carried out jointly by security and intelligence agencies from Lithuania, Poland, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Latvia, Estonia, the United States and Canada. The prosecutor’s office did not specify how many people were detained in Lithuania or other countries.
Investigators have said the plan was developed and organised by Russian citizens with links to Russian military intelligence, some of whom are linked to the attempted bombing of the IKEA in Vilnius in 2024.
So far, 15 citizens of Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine have been charged.
Police searches in the Baltic states and Poland have found explosives hidden in cans of canned goods, as well as detonators. The investigation is still ongoing.
