Lithuanian border guards again assist Latvia in securing the border with Belarus

A new group of Lithuanian border guards is heading to Latvia on Monday to help secure the border with Belarus and prevent the entry of illegal migrants.

According to the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT), eight border guards from the Pagėgiai border unit and the Coast Guard are being deployed to Latvia. Among them are two canine handlers with service dogs and two criminal intelligence officers.

This group will replace Lithuanian border guards who have been working in Latvia since the 7th of July.

They are scheduled to serve on the Latvian–Belarusian border until the 1st of August. After that,

decisions about continuing such assistance will be made based on the situation.

VSAT officers assist their Latvian colleagues with border surveillance, preventing illegal migration, and carrying out other related activities.

Lithuanian border guards have previously provided similar assistance to Latvia – in the autumn of 2023, several groups of VSAT officers, totaling 59 Lithuanian border guards, were deployed to help guard Latvia’s border with Belarus.

They also participated in a similar mission near the Latvian–Belarusian border in August of last year.
