Lithuanian residents who live in the area bordering Kaliningrad are forced to live with what they call provocations. On the other side of Neman River you can see large-scale Z on the walls of buildings and Soviet flags, as reported by Lithuanian public media LRT.
«Living here on the border, we see the [military] drills, the helicopters [and] equipment,» said Kęstutis, a former border guard. «Kaliningrad region is covered […] with soldiers.»
In Panemune, which has a bridge connecting it with Russian city of Sovetsk, residents have seen large-scale Z on walls of buildings. The letters are drawn in the colours resembling St. George ribbons. Both symbols are banned in Lithuania because they are used in the war in Ukraine.
These and other symbols that are used in support of war are banned in Latvia as well.
Despite the increased tension due to sanctions on Kaliningrad transit, border guards note – there is no reason for concern.
