Legal annual income of 126 000 Latvian residents does not reach EUR 1 000

The legal annual income of 126 000 Latvian residents does not reach EUR 1 000, as TV3 programme 900 seconds was told by the newly-appointed Director General of the State Revenue Service (VID) Baiba Šmite-Roķe.
“The yearly income of 126 000 Latvian residents is below EUR 1 000. Yearly! So we have to ask how they manage to survive,” said Šmite-Roķe. At the same time, she also said that among those residents 80 000 are aged between 20 to 70 years.
She also said that VID will not monitor every individual euro withdrawn or deposited to ATMs. Nevertheless, the service will analyse residents whose legal annual income is so low they shouldn’t have anything to deposit to an ATM, and yet ATM operations still happen regardless.
“We want to ensure transparency of the cash flow. However, we will take measures only against residents who do not have justifiable reasons for cash operations,” said Šmite-Roķe.
As previously reported, on Tuesday, the 30th of January, Latvia’s Cabinet of Ministers approved Baiba Šmite-Roķe on the post of Director General of the State Revenue Service. She will take office on the 13th of February 2024.
