Latvia’s Saeima speaker promises continued unbending support for Ukraine

On Thursday, 10 November, Saeima speaker Edvards Smiltēns met with Ukraine’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Latvia Olexandr Mischenko. During this meeting he promised Latvia will be unbending in its continued support of Ukraine.
Latvia is prepared to continue providing Ukraine with necessary support, stressed the Saeima speaker, adding that Latvia will not have any cooperation with Russia or Belarus on a parliamentary level.
«The Saeima will remain unbending in its continued support of Ukraine. Latvia and Ukraine are close friends and allies, and this meeting is symbolic proof that we will continue standing by our shared values – freedom, independence and democracy,» stressed Smiltēns.

The Ukrainian ambassador thanked Latvia for continued support, adding that Latvia is one of Ukraine’s biggest supporters.

Mischenko also thanked Latvia for assisting with rehabilitation of Ukrainian troops, stressing that this aid is as important as ammunition.
The ambassador added that Ukrainians are prepared to fight to achieve a joint victory, adding that Latvia is the engine that drives EU’s solidarity.
«Although Ukraine is not a member of the European Union or NATO, we feel represented there thanks to Latvia.»
As informed by the Saeima press-service, the U.S. and Ukrainian ambassadors were the first who met with the new Saeima speaker.
