On Wednesday, the 25th of January, Latvian President Egils Levits met with Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere in Riga Castle to discuss «topical legislative matters in Latvia» and Latvia’s position regarding the creation of a special international tribunal to investigate Russian war crimes.
The State President’s Chancellery reports the president and minister discussed Latvia’s position in regards to the decision of the European Court of Law to cancel the EU directive that ensured transparency of information regarding beneficial owners. Levits and Lībiņa-Egnere agreed during the meeting that Latvia must maintain in force the regulation that permits revealing legal persons’ beneficial owners.
This helps maintain honest and transparent operations of the financial sector.
The president also informed the minister there are plans to submit to the Saeima a project of amendments to the Law on Financing of Political Organisations to enhance content capacity of political parties. Levits has already discussed this topic with multiple Saeima factions.
The president and minister discussed the Court of Economic Affairs and possible expansion of the court’s competence. Participants of the discussion concluded that
so far this court’s work has been effective and professional.
Aside from other major topics, such as the reorganisation of the Central Election Commission, the two officials also discussed the way to implement in legislation the ruling of the Constitutional Court in regards to civil union in Latvia.
