On Thursday, 20 January, Latvia’s Saeima elected Egils Zviedris as the new Director of the Constitution Protection Bureau (SAB).
Previously 90 Saeima deputies voted in favour of appointing Zviedris to this position and no one voted against or abstained in the vote.
As previously reported, the National Security Council had previously agreed on picking Zviedris for the post of SAB director. Until now he served as SAB deputy director and the chief of the Intelligence Office.
Zviedris has worked in state security institutions since 1992 and at SAB since 2000.
Zviedris graduated from Riga Technical University with a Bachelor’s degree in construction. He also graduated from Turība University with Master’s degree in business management.
He worked in the Government Security Service, State Economic Sovereignty Protection Department, Security Police. In 2000 he became a special affairs inspector for SAB Intelligence office. In 2011 he became the chief of SAB Intelligence Office. Since 2014 he has served in the post of deputy director of SAB and chief of the Intelligence Office.
Since August 2021 Zviedris has served as a representative of SAB in international meetings of European and NATO intelligence and security services, as reported by the State President’s Chancellery.
The previous SAB director and prosecutor general Jānis Maizītis passed away at the age of 60 year in November 2021.
