In commemoration of Latvian freedom fighters, Riga will hold events in the city centre and surrounding areas. A church service is expected, as well as lighting of candles at the Brothers Cemetery, a torch procession, a fire raft release onto Daugava River, concerts, thematic workshops, exhibitions and a documentary film’s presentation.
Residents are invited to attend the special church service at 09:00 a.m. on Friday, 11 November.
An exhibition of the Lāčplēsis War Order as well as a new exhibition called Satversme 100+ will be held at the National History Museum at 10:00 a.m. At 21:00 p.m. the Latvian War Museum will be holding an exhibition of war vehicles.
At 15:00 p.m. a moment of commemoration dedicated to Latvian freedom fighters will be held at Sudrabkalniņš monument in Imanta. The event will be attended by Vilki men’s choirs, Vilcenes folk band and Auseklītis orchestra, as reported by Riga City Council.
At 17:00 p.m. the traditional event Freedom fighters’ spirit through the ages will be held. During this event residents are invited to come to the Riga Brothers Cemetery to light candles. After that there will be a torch procession all the way to the Freedom Monument and 11 November Embankment, where a fire raft will be lowered onto Daugava River near the monument to Kristaps the Great. At the Freedom Monument priest Guntis Kalme will address the crowd with a speech and Vilki men’s choir will perform songs of the Latvian Freedom Fighters.
One of the central events of Lāčplēsis Day will be held at the Latvian Shooters Square – at 18:00-22:00 p.m. a concert featuring Power songs performed by Riga folk bands and Līvi rock band will be held.
At 19:00 p.m. the concert Road to Latvia will be held at Riga Dome Square.
A different event will be held in Vecmīlgrāvis – Culture centre Ziemeļblāzma park – With an undying fire in the heart. Poet, composer and musician Lauris Valters and mixed choir Norise will be attending it.
At the end of Lāčplēsis Day residents will be invited to Ave Sol concert hall, where the Peaceful Night at Daugavmala, will be held.
A documentary by Latvian film director Andris Rozenbergs ‘Punishment for a dream’ will be shown online on the website of Riga Culture and Folk Art Centre Small Guild at 11:00 a.m.
