As a result of various measures performed by Latvian State Revenue Service (VID), it was possible to increase the country’s tax revenue by approximately EUR 60 million, as the media were told by VID Director General Baiba Šmite-Roķe at a press-conference held on Wednesday, the 19th of February.
This is also thanks to letters sent last autumn to individuals whose declared income had a discrepancy of more than EUR 20 000 when compared to their bank account turnover it was possible to increase tax revenue by more than EUR 9 million, said Šmite-Roķe.
The VID sent about 99 000 letters, and a quarter of the recipients responded to them either by explaining the discrepancy or by voluntarily paying outstanding taxes. Šmite-Roķe explained that as a result of those letters, the tax revenue was increased by EUR 6 million, but as a result of the control of the capital growth performed on the recipients of the letters – by another EUR 3.4 million.
She also said that there are also three-quarters of recipients of reminder letters left. VID works with each of them individually to ensure taxes are paid. For example, the discrepancy between declared income and account turnover of several of those people reaches EUR 1.5 million. Contacts continue.
There are approximately 5 000 people whose discrepancy is more than EUR 100 000. VID continues working with them as well, said Šmite-Roķe.
The head of VID reported that an additional EUR 3 million was secured through border control measures and EUR 5 million – through excise goods.
Tax incentive and tax control measures have collected an additional EUR 35.5 million and EUR 14 million have been received with the refusal of unjustified tax refunds.
In the fight against criminal offences, last year, financial resources in the amount of EUR 8.3 million were arrested, as well as movable property worth EUR 2.2 million was arrested. In total, the prevented damage EUR 16 million.
VID also recovered EUR 575.3 million from debt enforcement, said Šmite-Roķe.
