Latvian statistical bureau reports birth rates are going down quickly

The Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSP), reports, based on provisional data, that in the first nine months of 2023 there were 10 822 newborns registered in the country, which is 1 741 newborns or 13.9% fewer when compared to the same period of 2022.
The number of newborns registered every month in 2023 was lower when compared to the respective month of 2022. It was also

the lowest number of newborns registered every respective month in the past hundred years.

Death rates are down as well: in nine months of 2023 there were 20 312 deaths registered in Latvia, which is 2 502 or 11% less when compared to the same period of 2022 and 347 or 2.1% less when compared to before the pandemic in 2019.
Of the nine months death rates were the highest in January, when 3 001 deaths were registered (56 or 1.9% fewer than in January 2022). In the other eight months of 2023 death rates were lower when compared to the corresponding months of the year prior. As a result of natural population growth this year, Latvia’s population has gone down by 9 500 people.
The number of marriages is close to pre-pandemic numbers – 9 095 marriages in the first nine months of 2023. Compared to the same period of 2022, this is 755 or 7.7% marriages less, and when compared to 2020 it is 301 or 4.6% marriages more. The number of marriages in Latvia went down rapidly because of Covid-19 restrictions.
The provisional population number in Latvia, as of the 1st of October 2023, was 1 876 400. This is 14.6 thousand people fewer when compared to the 1st of January 2023, CSP reports.
