The State Security Service (VDD) confirms having issued a warning to Latvian political party For Stability! in accordance with Article 12 Section 19 of the Law on State Security Institutions.
The warning was issued due to the statements made by the party’s members to information resources used by the Russian Federation and Republic of Belarus for propaganda purposes and which are controlled by individuals under financial and economic sanctions imposed by the European Union.
Monitoring of the information space showed that in interviews provided to information resources used by Russia and Belarus for propaganda purposes For Stability! Members and 14th Saeima members Aleksejs Rosļikovs and Glorija Grevcova made statements that are in breach of Article 5 of Section 7 of the Law on Political Parties.
This article, adopted on the 23rd of June 2022, states that
political parties are prohibited from providing support, including informational (propaganda), to persons or states that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence or constitutional system of democratic states.
VDD has informed the party of its findings. A warning was issued that no breach of the restrictions listed in the Law on Political Parties is allowed. VDD also invited the party to prevent any potential illegalities in the future and warned it that if this is not done, the service will be authorised to use legal measures against the party.
VDD reminds that Part 2 of Section 45 of the Law on Political Parties may be initiated if a political party’s activities are found to be in breach of the Constitution, laws or other legislative acts, if it puts at risk national or public security, or if its actions are in breach of Part 4 or 5 of Section 7 of the aforementioned law.
VDD also notes that provision of financial or economic resources to a private or legal person under EU sanctions for undermining the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine is a criminally punishable offence.
