Latvian soldiers in Ukraine after the war? Training mission under consideration during peacetime

In the event of a ceasefire in Ukraine, Latvia — as a member of the “Coalition of Good Will” — plans to contribute to the military training of Ukrainian soldiers, according to Roberts Skraučs, military public affairs advisor to the Commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS), Kaspars Pudāns.

The exact scope of NBS involvement is not being disclosed at this time, but the deployment of Latvian soldiers to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire would require a decision by the Latvian Parliament (Saeima), Skraučs emphasized. He also noted that Ukrainian soldiers have been regularly trained in Latvia since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Earlier this year, Commander Pudāns told journalists that in discussions about potential Latvian military involvement in peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine, he would advise against engaging as mediators between Russia and Ukraine.

As previously reported, the Latvian Armed Forces have developed military plans for a potential scenario in which a ceasefire takes effect in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity) informed journalists on the 10th of July, following a virtual meeting of “Coalition of Good Will” leaders on support for Ukraine.

Siliņa stated that Latvian military personnel are working in coordination with troops from other member countries of the coalition, and that “in fact, military plans are already in place so that if a ceasefire occurs, we would be ready to implement them.”

The “Coalition of Good Will” comprises countries that are willing and prepared to provide continued support to Ukraine.
