A soldier and his wife died in a domestic conflict in Liepaja, as confirmed by State Police Kurzeme Region Department.
State Police report that on Tuesday evening police received information of a man pounding on the door of an apartment in Liepaja, Mirdzas Ķempes Street. The report also mentioned a possible domestic conflict.
A police patrol was dispatched. After five minutes police received another call. This time the caller mentioned having heard gunshots at the same address.
While the first police car was on its way, State Police Special Operations Battalion stationed in Liepaja was called in to assist. Police arrived at the scene and found a woman lying on the lawn.
Ambulance provided the woman with first aid and delivered her to a hospital.
Police broke down the door of the apartment and found a man with signs of injuries. Unfortunately, ambulance workers reported the man showed no signs of life.
The same day police received information from the hospital that the woman that was hospitalised earlier had died.
Police have commenced an investigation.
In the interest of the investigation, no additional information is reported.
Latvian National Armed Forces Commander Leonīds Kalniņš’s press-officer Sandra Brāle has confirmed that a soldier of Latvia’s army is involved in the incident and that it happened during his free time. She said the soldier’s service firearm was not used.
Considering that the incident is not related to military service and happened outside active service hours, NBS does not provide detailed information regarding the soldier’s profession in the armed forces.
Liepaja Regional Hospital’s public relations specialist Indra Grase confirmed that a woman was hospitalised yesterday and that, unfortunately, she later died from her injuries.
Liepajniekiem.lv portal, meanwhile, reports that, according to unofficial information, the woman had jumped out the window and that a soldier of Latvian National Armed forces fired on her multiple times from above.
