On Thursday, the 1st of June, Latvia’s parliament passed the legislative draft in which support is voiced for Ukraine at the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius and an invitation for the country to join the alliance is detailed.
Saeima deputies say it is vitally important to use the opportunities provided by NATO summit in Vilnius in order to jointly consider future decisions and progress, as well as use practical measures to expand NATO support for Ukraine.
Members of the Latvian parliament said it is necessary to strengthen NATO’s and Ukraine’s political partnership.
The Saeima stresses in this announcement that its members are in support of a strong and efficient aid from EU and NATO allies to Ukraine. Saeima deputies request provision of military, technical, defensive and humanitarian aid to Ukraine for as long as necessary to ensure this country’s ability to effectively defend its territory on land, in the air and at sea.
Deputies also invited tightening sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus to prevent aggressor countries from gaining financial and technological resources to continue the war.
The Saeima also listed strong commitment to continue supporting international efforts to ensure the aggressor countries are brought to justice for the war crimes committed in Ukraine.
The June 2022 decision from the Council of Europe to provide Ukraine EU candidate state status and continue the country’s path to joining the EU was supported as well.
Ukraine has taken a course towards Euro-Atlantic integration, Saeima deputies say, supporting the full inclusion of Ukraine into NATO once the situation allows it.
“Latvia will continue providing multi-sided support to Ukraine on a national, municipal, civilian and non-governmental levels to strengthen the country’s resilience against the Russian aggression,” the Saeima’s announcement mentions.
During the meeting Saeima deputies also voiced commitment to supporting Ukraine in its restoration, especially in Chernihiv.
The Saeima supports Ukraine’s initiatives presented in the UN General Assembly and stresses that on the UN level there has been a great deal of progress in opposing Russian aggression and prevention of consequences associated with it.
