None of the presidential candidates in Latvia have unanimous support from the ruling coalition, said Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš at a conference after a meeting of the government.
Commenting on the recent announcement from businessman and Combined List political party founder Uldis Pīlēns to run for presidency, the PM said he found out about this from mass media. He added that this topic was not discussed during today’s government meeting.
Although Pīlēns is the first to announce his start in this May’s expected presidential elections, the PM told journalists that
“New Unity supports the current President of Latvia Egils Levits”, even though the Combined List has stressed the party will not support Levits.
“The coalition does not have one shared candidate, but we haven’t discussed this topic yet,” said the PM.
As previously reported, Pīlēns has decided to run for president. He is the first presidential candidate to announce his start in the upcoming presidential elections. Latvia’s President Egils Levits has yet to reveal if he has plans to run in presidential elections.
Pīlēns said he made the decision to run for presidency after giving it some serious thought.
