Latvian residents asked to report potholes dangerous to road traffic

Riga City Council asks residents to report to the Road Management Centre locations of potholes potentially dangerous to road traffic, as reported by the city council’s representative Lelde Rudzika.
“The volatile weather, when air temperature varies around 0° C and precipitation is frequent, defects in road surfaces appear all the more rapidly,” adds the municipal administration. “Previously we could not predict where potholes could appear. This is why the municipal administration invites residents to report potentially dangerous locations to the Traffic Management Centre.”

Potholes with a size larger than 0.1 m2 and depth larger than 5 cm are considered dangerous.

Potholes appear the most rapidly on sections of roads that already have various defects and cracks.
Cold asphalt-laying technology is suitable for weather conditions when the air temperature is below zero. Pothole maintenance time is affected by multiple factors – weather conditions, road traffic intensity and the state of road surface. The main objective of repair and maintenance work is preventing dangerous situations on roads.
In spring, when average daytime air temperature is expected to exceed +5° C, it is planned to commence road repairs in Riga using the usual technologies – hot asphalt and continuous asphalt-laying, which ensures a longer service life and allows for repairs of not only potholes dangerous to traffic, but also repairs of defects of smaller size.
