Latvian prosecution office has presented charges to former Saeima deputy Glorija Grevcova for justifying and glorifying Russia’s war crimes and has put her on a wanted list.
Grevcova did not respond to numerous notifications that were sent to her. Police did not find her in her residence either. This is why she is now a wanted person, as LETA was informed by the prosecution office.
On Wednesday, the 3rd of April, shortly after information was reported, Grevcova contacted the prosecutor to discuss the time of her arrival for official presentation of charges. Despite this, however, she remains a wanted woman, the prosecution office reports.
LETA confirms that despite being on a wanted list, Grevcova remains active on social networks. She is also an official candidate for the upcoming European Parliament elections from the Association of New Latvians.
Criminal charges were presented to her in accordance with two sections of the Criminal Law: justifying war crimes and inciting national hatred. These crimes are punishable with deprivation of freedom for up to five years, probation, community service or a fine.
Prior to the case’s submission to the prosecution office, the investigation was done by the State Security Service (VDD).
The criminal process against Grevcova was commenced by VDD after she posted a video on TikTok platform in which she put into question the information on display in the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.
VDD found her other videos on social networks. In them, VDD found acts of justification of Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine.
At the end of January 2023 VDD concluded its inspection of the public statements made by then the member of For Stability Gloria Grevcova during her visit to the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. The decisions was made by VDD to initiate criminal proceedings for possible gross disparagement of the occupation of Latvia by the USSR and Nazi Germany.
The video in Russian in which Grevcova said she’d come to the “so-called Museum of Occupation” has since been deleted from her TikTok account. In this video, Grevcova claimed “facts don’t align” in the museum and that the guide was telling her about “a parallel, made-up history”.
“What kind of museum is this and what is it’s purpose? […] We looked at all exhibits and we concluded – we’re being fooled, how we’re being fooled,” Grevcova said in that video, calling what she saw in the museum “real propaganda”.
Grevcova also mentioned in another TikTok video that what is going on in Ukraine is a civil war in accordance with all canons of a civil war, with Ukrainian people fighting the Ukrainian army.
“This is all I know. So don’t come and speculate to me that Russian is attacking anyone. I know what’s happening, I can see Ukrainian fighting their own. This is a civil war by all accounts,” she said.
This video was published before Grevcova’s video of the 22nd of January 2023 in which she detailed her visit to the museum.
The Supreme Court has refused to initiate cassation proceedings in a criminal case in which the former 14th Saeima deputy Grevcova was accused of providing false information to the Central Election Commission (CEC). Consequently, the judgment of the Riga City Court came into force, by which Grevcova was found guilty and punished with 160 hours of community service, and thus the deputy also lost her seat in the Saeima in February this year.
