Latvian President: we have to support Ukraine, otherwise we will have bigger problems in the future

Latvia will continue stressing the importance of continuing providing support to Ukraine, otherwise we will have bigger problems in the future, said Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs during his meeting with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa.
He mentioned that discussions about support for Ukraine are wider than they were at the beginning of the war. Discussions are taking place in the US as well, where legislators decided to postpone the vote on the provision of funding for Ukraine because of domestic political considerations.
“It looks as though many are tired of the war and think they can drag decision making on the provision of support for weeks of months. This is not the case.

Soldiers continue fighting and dying in Ukraine. Attacks continue.

I hope and believe the vote in the US Congress will be positive and funding and military aid for Ukraine will continue,” said the Latvian president.
According to him, heated discussions are expected in the Council of Europe, where politicians will soon be holding discussions about the creation of a EUR 50 billion financing mechanism for Ukraine’s recovery, restoration and modernisation between 2024-2027.
The president said that he does not consider any decision in regards to the support of Ukraine as self-explanatory. Each decision requires in-depth analysis from the prime minister, ministers, diplomats and experts. They also have to work with similarly-minded countries.

“Latvia continues stressing that we cannot relax and that the situation is complicated.

We don’t have many other strategies aside from continuing our cooperation with our friends to ensure Ukraine does not disappear from the agenda and so that support continues. This is a long war. A long war requires a lot of resources, strategic patience and energy from us as well,” said Rinkēvičs.
In October, US President Joe Biden asked the US Congress to approve a USD 106 billion national security financing package, which includes support for Ukraine and Israel.
The US Congress has been paralysed by the internal conflict within the Republican party, as far-right legislators object to supporting Kyiv any further.
