The State Police in Latvia will have the right to separate aggressors in violent incidents from their victims even if the victim refuses to submit a report against the aggressor, according to changes in law.
On Thursday, February 17, amendments to the Latvian Law on Police went into force.
The law has been amended to care for persons, who have become victims in violence, to avoid a real risk of further violence against the person. In 2021, more than 10,000 domestic conflicts, where the involvement of police was needed, have been registered in the Latvian State Police.

After the police was given the right to separate aggressors in violent incidents from their victims without a report from the victim, police officers will have to evaluate the threat of violence at the place of the incident. On the basis of this evaluation, police officers will write a decision, containing information from the person, who needs protection, and evidence of violence to arrive at the conclusion of the risk of further violence.
