Latvian PM to have a long talk with institutions about pension errors – nearly 1 000 pensioners affected already

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has invited the management of the State Revenue Service (VID) and the State Social Insurance Agency (VSAA) to hear their explanations about the incorrectly calculated pensions for some pensioners in Latvia this month, as the PM wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

She noted that state institutions have a duty to work for the benefit of the people, so she expects a clear vision as to how both institutions aim to improve their work and cooperation to avoid such bureaucratic mistakes in the future.

The meeting is planned for Monday, the 20th of January.

The number of Latvian pensioners whose pension was incorrectly calculated in January because VID failed to send to VSAA their wage tax books reaches 907, according to LETA.

Initially, VSAA told LETA that the error affected a couple of hundred pensioners, adding later that the number keeps increasing. As for the initial 60 pensioners, their situations were revolved individually thanks to cooperation with VID. The difference between their pension in January will be added to the amount in February.

VSAA stresses, however, that each case is handled individually.

VID told LETA that pensioners do not have to do anything – the problem will be resolved by the two institutions.

Both institutions apologized to pensioners for this unpleasant situation.
