On Friday, the 7th of July, Latvia’s Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš accepted Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs’ resignation now that the latter enters his post as President of Latvia, as confirmed by Kariņš’s press-secretary Sandris Sabajevs.
Until a new minister of foreign affairs is appointed, duties will be performed by the prime minister.
Both President of Latvia Egils Levits and Saeima speaker Edvards Smiltēns have been informed of this decision.
Rinkēvičs remained as Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs for 12 years. On the 31st of May 2023 the Saeima elected him as Latvia’s next president. 52 deputies voted in his favour, including New Unity, Union of Greens and Farmers, and Progressive party.
