Efforts are being put into reorganising the state budget in favour of the healthcare system, said Latvia’s Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš in an interview to LTV Rīta panorāma.
The PM explained that improvements to the system should come together with additional funding. “It’s not the one reform that will resolve everything, but it is an important step forward,” he added.
“It is clear we will have to take out more from the budget pie,” said Kariņš.
He added that it is necessary to identify situations in which ministries have “loose money” and how to divert this money towards healthcare.
Previously it was reported that the Latvian Trade Union of Health and Social Care Workers (LVSADA) has plans to ask the government to allocate additional funding worth at least EUR 140 million to the healthcare sector “to ensure basic functions”.
