Latvian PM doesn’t want to criticise only the police for recent failures

Although in recent weeks there have been several crimes committed in Latvia that had the residents question the competence of the country’s police force, PM Krišjānis Kariņš still trusts the work done by Minister of the Interior Māris Kučinskis.
Commenting on the murder of the woman in Jekabpils and the fight involving teenagers in Imanta, Kariņš said in an interview to TV3 on Wednesday, the 10th of May, that improvements to the work of State Police are possible, but when it comes to these specific cases, he would rather not put all the blame on the police.

He is more worried about the general mood among residents and the root cause of violence,

because “police are not the ones who raise children”. Kariņš plans to call a meeting with representatives from law enforcement institutions to find a solution and improve the fight against consequences and the causes of crime.
When asked when residents can expect improvements to domestic security, since this sector is outlined as a state budget priority for this year, Kariņš said there are many challenges in this sector. One such challenge is security on the border with Belarus.
