On Wednesday, 16 March, Latvian parliament’s Mandates, Ethics and Submissions Committee approved the legislative draft regarding the approval of Saeima deputy’s authority for singer, Pērkons music band soloist Ieva Akuratere.
Now the Saeima will need to decide on this issue.
As previously reported, after voluntarily joining Ukrainian armed forces, the now former chairman of Saeima’s Legal Affairs Committee and member of Conservative party Juris Jurašs sent a notification to the parliament’s chancellery, informing the Saeima of his decision to put down his mandate.
According to results of elections, Jurašs’ seat in the Saeima should now go to Akuratere. She has agreed to work in the parliament, as confirmed by Conservative party’s leader and Latvian Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns.
As previously reported, graduate of Latvia’s Police Academy and former head of Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau’s Operational Activities Office Juris Jurašs has joined Ukrainian armed forces as a volunteer.
Following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Latvia’s Saeima passed amendments to the National Security Law, allowing Latvian citizens to enlist in service in Ukrainian armed forces.
Russia commenced a military attack on Ukraine on 24 February.
