Latvian party distances itself from ex-mayor’s take on Ukraine war

The Latvian Union of Farmers and Greens (UGF) has announced that it distances itself from its former candidate for the post of the Latvian prime minister, notorious ex-mayor of Ventspils Aivars Lembergs after he voiced his views on Russia’s war against Ukraine days after leaving detention on bail.
A representative of UGF, Dace Kārkliņa the political party, this represented in the Latvian Saeima, distances itself from the opinion of Lembergs published in the newspaper Ventas Balss on Monday, March 7. Lembergs is the chairman of the party For Latvia and Ventspils, a leading player in the Ventspils City Council. For Latvia and Ventspils is a party of cooperation to the UGF.
«We stress again that the UGF fully supports Ukraine and its President in the fight against the aggression carried out by Russia and that the comments by the head of the party of cooperation are in clear contradiction with the position of the political alliance,» representatives of the UGF stated.

In an interview published on the web site VentasBalss.lv, Lembergs was asked, how to avoid the worst-case scenario in the war, he said that a solution would be to «sit at the table of negotiations with Putin». Lembergs also claimed «unfortunately, the West rejected discussions with Russia». The latter statement is not true as the war was preceded by intensive diplomatic efforts by the leaders of Germany, France and the foreign ministers of the US, the UK and Germany, who were told by Russia that it did not intend to attack Ukraine.
