Latvian NBS official accused of abuse of office and fraud in food procurement procedure

The prosecutor’s office has presented criminal charges to an official of Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) for abuse of office, forging documents and fraud in relation to food procurement procedure, as LETA was told by the prosecutor’s office.

The above-mentioned official, guided by greedy motives, during the period from the 15th of March 2022 to the 1st of March 2023, when placing orders for food products from a company against which proceedings for the application of a coercive measure to a legal entity have been initiated, indicated to its representatives the food products to be actually supplied to the victim and their quantity, as well as give instructions on which goods and in what quantity not to actually deliver, but to fictitiously list as delivered in the company’s waybills.

In addition, the accused officer and two private persons against whom the criminal proceedings have been separated in separate records, guided by greedy motives, during the above-mentioned period falsified documents in the group of persons by prior agreement, which granted the right to receive funds from the victim for actually undelivered food goods, that is, not less than the company’s 169 waybills, which the accused official submitted to the NBS accounting for payment.

Thus, the persons defrauded the funds in the amount of EUR 113 519, which were transferred to the bank account of the said company. As a result of criminal activities, the state suffered losses in the amount of EUR 113 519.

The case has been sent to Riga District Court. The date of the trial procedure is unknown.

In the criminal proceedings divided from the main case with two private persons, as well as with the representative of the aforementioned company on the 9th of December 2024, agreements have been reached on the admission of guilt and punishment.
