Latvian minister promises to find solutions to various problems with administrative territorial reform

We have to find solutions to fix the mistakes in the administrative territorial reform, said Latvian Minister of Environment Protection and Regional Development Māris Sprindžuks at a meeting of Saeima’s Public Administration and Local Government Committee on Monday, the 4th of September.
LETA previously reported that during today’s meeting sub-committees rejected the ministry’s proposed solutions in regards to Garkalne and Varakļāni.

Sprindžuks mentioned several counties that require solutions in the context of the reform.

He mentioned that Līvāni cannot afford to create a municipal police force because it is too expensive and the local municipality is unable to perform its intended functions as is.
The minister also stressed a situation when Rezekne and Daugavpils both announce their school networks are organised and that they will not participate in solving the problems related to school networks of nearby regions should be avoided.

Valka is in trouble as well – the municipality is unable to perform its autonomous functions, added the minister.

He added that all of the identified problems should appear in next year’s report.
