Latvian minister invites municipalities to not issue permits for 9 May festivities

Latvian Minister of Justice Jānis Bordāns has released an invitation for municipal administrations in the country to not allow the organisation of festivities associated with 9 May in the country’s cities.
«Putin’s regime has started a war against Ukraine and the entire free world. By waging war against an independent country, Russia’s actions bear signs of war crimes, especially considering attacks on civilians, children included,» said Latvia’s minister.
«The same Russia with its current regime is the heir to all the rights of and obligations of the Soviet Union.»
«The same Russian tanks that participate in the ‘victory parade’ in Moscow on 9 May are currently firing on Ukrainians.»

Bordāns believes «in the current situation any celebration of Victory Day would be considered an action that not only aggressive, amoral and divisive, but also an action that indirectly justifies Russia’s, as the inheritor of USSR’s rights and obligations, attack on Ukraine and war crimes».
«This is why I urge every Latvian municipality, including Riga, to not issue permits for any festivities associated with 9 May and so-called Victory Day.»
